Test D Program: Optimizing Your Vitamin D Level

Vitamin D – Test • Correct • Optimize by MP Clinic

Vitamin D is an important nutrient that plays a role in many body functions, including bone health, the immune system and hair follicle function — especially in regulating the Hair Growth Cycle, a key process in maintaining healthy, well-functioning hair roots.

Hair follicles contain Vitamin D receptors (Vitamin D Receptor: VDR), which play a role in hair follicle function and the transitions of the hair cycle. Several studies have found an association between low Vitamin D levels and certain types of hair loss and thinning, such as genetic hair thinning, patchy hair loss and Telogen Effluvium.

Even though Thailand is sunny all year round, low Vitamin D levels are surprisingly common among Thai people.

A study of Vitamin D levels in 4,098 Thai people, from the 6th Thai National Health Examination Survey (2019–2020), found that

31%

had blood Vitamin D levels below 30 ng/mL

4%

had blood Vitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL

The level below 30 ng/mL is the cut-off used for classification in that study. It does not mean that everyone in this group has a Vitamin D deficiency that requires treatment.

Today, many people’s lifestyles — such as working indoors, not getting enough sunlight, an unbalanced diet, as well as age and body weight — may cause their Vitamin D levels to be lower than they should be.

MP Clinic’s Vitamin D Optimization Program therefore focuses on assessing your Vitamin D level together with advice from a doctor, to plan systematic hair care, rather than taking supplements without supporting information.

Benefits of Optimizing Your Vitamin D Level

1. Helps assess Vitamin D deficiency

A blood test helps assess the Vitamin D level in your body, showing whether you have a Vitamin D deficiency so that your health care can be planned appropriately.

2. Supports hair health care

Vitamin D is involved in hair follicle function, and studies have found an association between low Vitamin D levels and certain types of hair loss. Testing may therefore be part of identifying factors related to hair problems — it does not confirm that Vitamin D deficiency is the cause of hair loss in every case.

3. Helps plan more targeted care

Once the results are known, the doctor can use them as part of the health assessment and decide whether dietary changes or Vitamin D supplementation are needed, as well as whether further tests are necessary.

4. Reduces the risk of unnecessary supplementation

Taking too much Vitamin D can be harmful to your health. Testing and getting advice from a doctor helps make supplementation more appropriate for each individual.

Who Is This Program For?

The Vitamin D testing and optimization program at MP Clinic is suitable for those who want to assess their hair health together with their Vitamin D level, especially the following groups

1. Young people and older adults

Young people who live mostly indoors or rarely get sunlight may have low Vitamin D levels, while older adults’ ability to produce Vitamin D through the skin declines with age.

2. People who are underweight or don’t eat enough

Especially those on strict diets, who eat very little, or who have limited food variety, and may not get enough Vitamin D and nutrients important for hair.

3. People who are overweight or obese

Because Vitamin D is fat-soluble, people with more stored body fat may have lower blood Vitamin D levels than people of normal weight.

4. Shift workers or people with irregular working hours

Such as night workers, office workers and staff who spend most of their time indoors, who may get less sunlight than usual.

5. People with hair loss or thinning from a young age

Especially those with hair loss combined with nutritional or lifestyle risk factors, who should have the cause properly assessed, including a Vitamin D test when indicated.

6. People with severe hair loss or a poor response to treatment

Even after treatment with medication, PRP injections or other methods, additional contributing factors may need to be assessed, including nutritional deficiencies that may affect hair health.

Why Is Testing and Optimizing Vitamin D Important for Hair Root Care?

Hair loss and thinning are not always caused by a single factor; they may result from a combination of genetics, hormones, nutrition, stress or certain health problems.

Detecting and correcting Vitamin D deficiency in people with an indication is therefore part of a holistic approach to hair root care, and may help reduce nutritional factors that affect hair health. However, Vitamin D supplementation does not replace treatment of the main cause of hair loss, and there is not yet enough evidence that increasing Vitamin D will make hair grow in every patient.

MP Clinic therefore developed the Vitamin D – Test • Correct • Optimize program to assess Vitamin D levels in people with an indication, plan the correction of Vitamin D deficiency as appropriate, and follow up under a doctor’s care — supporting hair root health alongside treating the actual causes of hair loss and thinning.

Because good hair care is not only about stimulating hair growth, but also about finding and addressing the underlying factors that affect hair root health in the long term.

The Program Process at MP Clinic

Step 1: Blood test to measure your Vitamin D level

A blood sample is taken to check the Vitamin D level in your body, usually with a 25-hydroxyvitamin D or 25(OH)D test, the main marker used to assess Vitamin D status.

Step 2: Results and advice from the doctor

Once the results are ready, the doctor explains your Vitamin D level and assesses it together with your health history, hair loss or thinning, and other related factors, to decide on the most suitable care for you.

Step 3: Take your vitamins home

Receive Vitamin D at the appropriate level to continue taking at home.

The Vitamin D testing program at MP Clinic takes about 15 minutes for the initial service steps, and is available at all 3 branches.

Hair health care should not rely on products or vitamins alone, because hair loss and thinning can have many causes. A Vitamin D test in people with an indication is one more piece of information that helps in planning your care.

FAQ

Yes. Hair loss may be related to genetics, hormones, stress or other factors.
No. It should be decided mainly based on your Vitamin D test result and the doctor’s advice.
Vitamin D is involved in hair follicle function, and Vitamin D deficiency may be associated with certain types of hair loss.
People with risk factors for Vitamin D deficiency in the 6 groups above, or with hair loss that the doctor believes should be investigated further.
Not always. The test helps assess Vitamin D deficiency, but hair loss can have many causes.
In general, many laboratories use a Vitamin D level below 30 ng/mL as the threshold indicating that Vitamin D may be insufficient. However, simply passing the laboratory’s minimum threshold does not mean the level is optimal for hair root health in everyone. The doctor may therefore consider raising the Vitamin D level above that minimum in some cases, taking into account health factors and the cause of hair loss, to ensure appropriate and safe care.
Because having sunlight does not always mean the body gets enough Vitamin D — especially for people who work indoors, rarely go outside, work at night or are obese, all factors that may be associated with low Vitamin D levels.
Correcting a Vitamin D deficiency may help address nutritional factors related to hair root health, but it does not guarantee that hair will stop falling out or grow back, as results also depend on the cause of hair loss — especially for people with genetic or hormonal hair thinning, who still need treatment of the main cause at the same time.
Vitamin D is assessed with a 25-Hydroxyvitamin D or 25(OH)D blood test, which generally does not require fasting. If other blood tests are done at the same time, please follow the clinic’s instructions. The doctor will use the results to assess whether your Vitamin D level needs to be adjusted to suit you.
